Volunteerism is an integral, vital part of American society that serves important social, political, and societal functions.

The willingness to help others by voluntarily giving time and energy to engage in activities for the purpose of benefiting others is more than just a nice thing to do. Volunteering is an indicator of a community’s well-being, quality of life, and social capital which makes communities more connected, trusting, healthy, happy, and vibrant.

Volunteers serve to solve the biggest issues facing our communities today where our systems fail us, protecting and supporting our most vulnerable populations, strengthening local economies, decreasing crime rates, and improving public health.

 

Research has shown that people who volunteer tend to live longer, have better physical and mental health, greater functional ability in old age, and are overall happier on average than people who do not volunteer!

America wouldn't be able to function without our volunteer workforce; the contributions made by volunteers are invaluable to our society as a whole, but many people face barriers that prevent them from volunteering regularly (or at all!).

 

There is always a way for civic-minded, public-spirited individuals and groups to get involved and make a difference, but we don't always know where to start, and we aren't always motivated or able to figure it out!
